graphex'06 catalog posted 11 May 2006

This is the last major piece in a nearly year-long effort that was the GDC/BC’s Canadian design awards, Graphex’06. Yes, that’s a laser-cut cover, with the delicate, chewed-leaf logo of my own design cut from 100# Cougar cover.

All that painstaking work I did on the Call for Entries, served double and triple duty here in the catalogue.

Each section divider spread held a little more of that lively flora, and I gave Nick Shinn’s typeface Handsome as good a workout as it’s likely to get.

My typography is always a little quirky, but I’m not always whacked, and it’s times like this that 10 years working on books comes in handy.

This whole catalogue is in English and French, and I decided to run the English in Sara Soskolne’s not-yet-released Motet Sans, and the French in 2rebels’ Flembo Text. There was a lot of text so I ran them together, separated by some horizontal space and colour.

In the past, the catalogue has suffered from having too many winners for the number of pages. This year, by cutting down on the number of winners, we were able to give 1–2 pages per entry, and decent-sized images of each winner. In the “Awards of Merit” section, where winners shared a spread, I found that serendipitous pairings occurred. Purely by chance, facing images often shared similarities in colour or shape.

This entire endeavour was executed with volunteer and sponsored labour. If you’ve ever worked in a situation where everyone is donating their time and materials, you will know how difficult it is to meet deadlines and have accountability. Being respectful of everyone’s schedule and efforts has a snowball effect that can cause an enormous amount of stress. This came out of the bindery yesterday, and I’m so incredibly glad to see it done, and done so well.
